If you are a webmaster, like me, you are a parasite! However, we are all mostly good parasites because we are beneficial to our host.
Our host for this article is the search engine. Without us, search engines would die! We provide the “user generated content” that search engines need to make money (sell advertising).
This is a multi-part article focused on our many parasitic relationships. For example, what if nobody “tweeted”? When we tweet, we give twitter “user generated content”! The objective of this article series is a new basics course for webmasters to hone their skills and be a better parasite! Um, rank at the top of search engines.

Frankly, most first time owners of websites forget, or never knew, the basics of pulling visitor traffic to their website; and exploiting their opportunity to make more money online.

It is every webmaster’s desire to top the search engine rankings for hundreds of web pages on their site. Many try. Few succeed. Why is that? Mostly because they read some about how, then get frustrated when the “how” did not work. In this article series I guarantee you will rank some of your web pages; by taking advantage of my over 24 years of online/Internet expertise.
Google represents about 65% of the search market. So, much of the information will focus on Goggling Google metrics. Although, a few of these tips will impact your search ranking in Yahoo and Bing; even for the most competitive of “longtails”. Longtails are simply multiple word keyword phrases. For example this site targets the longtail “Internet Business Opportunity“. Secondarily it targets “Make Money Online“, and tertiary longtails like “Sell My Business” and “Buy A Business“.
The longtail “Internet Business Opportunity” is highly competitive. For every one search instance there are more than 5,000 web pages. This is a simple ratio of “supply” (web pages) and “demand” (average monthly searches). However, if you own the domain name InternetBusinessOpportunity.com you will most likely, with little effort, rise to the top of Google search rankings. Why? Since the summer of 2009 the Google algorithm gave substantially more weight when the domain name is the exact search term. If for example, you had a “billiard table” site, you can expect that “billiardtable.com” is taken. Not to worry!
You can fix this for your site. Such words as my and your can be attached to the beginning of the billiardtable.com domain and you will still quickly rank on the first page of search results. A few months back I saw a website for sale that provided “FreeSamples”. The site was just over a year old and ranked organically well. Why? The domain the webmaster registered was “YoFreeSamples.com” Close enough to the exact search longtail that his site got Google juiced! Meaning his subdirectories and pages had many top rankings in less than a year after starting. AND you ask? How much? His run rate from advertising and percentage of sale was $60,000 annualized income.
Google webmaster tools recently added an application that allows you to move your entire site to a new domain; without losing any of your precious top search rankings. It works just like the Post Office “change of address” form.
Another tip on organically gaining top rankings is the structure of your “permalink”. A permalink is an intelligent URl that has meaning to robots and readers. There are millions of users of the open source software WordPress. It is surprising how many never figured out how easy it is to change the default URI in WordPress from something like http://www.mywebsite.com/p?20. < That is the unique URI for a page. It gives no relevance to robots or readers. However, by turning on permalinks that cryptic URI gains meaning. Such as, http://www.mywebsite.com/mahogony-billard-tables/. Add one more item to this and you gain the hearts and minds (well, robot love) of your “host”. Be a parasite and give the robot an .html on the URI above. Making it http://www.mywebsite.com/mahogony-billard-tables.html. In WordPress you can make this change in a minute. Other open source programs might take two minutes.
CAVEAT: DO NOT do this on a mature site! You will drop from search results for up to six months because your URLs are all new to the robot. You can do this on a site that you are building and note how much you, parasite, are good for your host and your webpages.
A final note on search engines. Track your results! I mean Google Analytics is Free! Not even cheap, but FREE! Take advantage of your host and start tracking the minutiae of your longtails and most visited pages. DO NOT TOUCH those pages that are visited; start working on the pages that get no traffic. Tweak them by changing the URL with the webmaster tools above.
Oh, one more thing! (this is my Peter Falk, Colombo best impression) If your website does not have a “sitemap” for parasitic sake get one today! Make it easy for the parasite in you to get inside your search engine host. A sitemap works for Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and many other smaller robots.
Epilogue: If you take nothing else away from reading this article remember “USER GENERATED CONTENT”. It is how little parasitic webmasters got to be big Host Webmasters.
