San Francisco, May 1, 2007 – The average keyword price paid by online advertisers declined 3.3% percent in the first quarter of 2007 to $1.46, according to the Keyword Price Index® from Fathom Online, a leading provider of Search Marketing and technology services to the Fortune 1000.Despite the modest decrease, the recent trend in keyword prices over the past three quarters has been relatively stable and is just 5% higher than the first quarter of 2006, when the average keyword price was $1.39. Since Fathom Online started the Keyword Price Index, average keyword prices have ranged from a high of $1.78 in the second quarter of 2005 to $1.27 in the second quarter of 2006.
Unfortunately, the above was the last statistics released publicly by Fathom, subsequently acquired by Geary Interactive.
Since the demise of the Keyword Price Index in early 2007 I have been compiling statistics to develop a Keyword Bid Index©. My opinion is that “Bid” more accurately reflects the reporting of this statistic. Bid information can be compiled from public sources (such as Google Keyword Tool) , but to determine the Keyword Price one would need to compile private information from companies that pay the bill for the price!
My data gathering is complete and I am working on the formula to provide the most accurate stats possible. One insight I can clearly note is a rapid escalation in the Keyword Bid paid after November of 2007. This occurred due to a change in the way Google AdSense displays text ads. Prior to November of 2007 nearly 100% of the “area” of a text ad was “clickable”. Post November only the “headline” the “URL” clickable. Thereby reducing the click area by ~75%, to 25%. The result appears to have improved the “relevancy” (ERGO quality) of the customer. The extended result is the willingness of the advertiser to pay more per click. As a specific example one client I consult for in the “Home Decor” category of Internet Business Opportunity has seen his average click price paid increase from $.84 to an average of $1.07. |
