According to industry statistics, over 90% of the people who begin the search to buy a business fail to ever complete a purchase. Even worse, the average person looks at business for sale listings for 18 months and still, they never buy one!

Most clients I work with feel they do not have sufficient knowledge of an Internet business to make an informed decision as to its viability.  This year they also have a good reason for concern as 2009 will set a record regarding Internet scams, ripoffs, and outright fraud.

Many clients this year have lost their job, are concerned about losing their job, or are finding their income curtailed as an effect of the poor economy.  They have resources to buy an Internet Business Opportunity, but the concern of losing their nest egg gives rise to extreme aversions when it comes time to buy.  For the same reason that a lack of knowledge might affect the future income of the Internet business they buy.

There is, for the 90% of the people that fail to buy a business, an alternate solution; to start an online business!  You can’t expect to get rich quick, but what you can expect is to gain the basic knowledge and confidence to later buy an Internet business.  Here are the top five metrics that I believe are most important when planning your strategy to start your online business.

Domain Name

The ideal domain name for your online business is one that contains the search term that you intend as your primary keyword.  Websites revolve around “keywords”.  It is an important metric for how search engines index your website in search results.  Having the domain name contain the keyword, or keyword phrase, will aid in being near the top of search results.

Vic Ratio (measure of supply and demand):

I use a proprietary methodology to determine the viability of sustaining and/or growing your start up Internet business.  It is called a “Vic Ratio” (short for vicissitude, or the ease or difficulty of performing a task).  A Vic Ratio is a sophisticated methodology to determine “supply” and “demand”.  Think of “supply” as the number of web pages that include your keyword; and “demand” as the number people conducting searches for your keyword.  The fewer web pages that compete with you for visitors provides you a better opportunity to generate traffic.

The Three Cs:

The most successful and sustainable Internet business will have the three Cs.

Content: Search engines love content.  The more content you have the more opportunities you will have to be in search results.  It is not just simply writing an article.  It is “optimizing” that article towards a particular keyword, or keyword phrase.  For example if your primary keyword phrase was “start online business” you would want to write an article related to a derivative of start online business; such as start internet business.

Community: The Internet is all about “interactivity”.  Think Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter as examples of “interactivity”.  The simplest means of implementing interactivity on your start up online business is to create a forum.  Your best means of implementation is as a “subdomain” on your site.  For example, http://forum.startonlinebusiness.com.

Commerce: The Domain Name, TheVic Ratio, and the two Cs (content and community) are all about generating visitors to your start up online business.  Commerce is the payoff.  The Commerce is about making money online.  Without visitors to your online business; no money.

Links & Social Networking:

Unless you want to continue to add new daily content for your start up online business you will need to gain the support of other websites.  You will need to create links to your site from other websites.  You will also need to become popular on sites like technorati and twitter.

Don’t Give Up!:

Probably the most important of the Top Five To Do’s To Start An Online Business.  To make any headway in search results and generating traffic to your online business will take a minimum of six months.  Six months is a minimum unless you are prepared to have a professional team assist in developing your website.  This will cost you as much money as buying an Internet business opportunity that has already had it’s time in the bowels of of the Internet and is beginning to show the light of day.  Anyone telling you that you can make money the first day of your website is feeding you a detour rather than a shortcut.
