Web hosting has been around since the inception of the Internet. For without it no one would have a web site for you to view. However, web hosting isaccelerating through changes not seen since its’ inception. What is thecause for the upheaval? Web 2.0 is one answer. An increase in activeweb site is another. The most significant event is software and services integration. In the beginning it took a programmer and graphic artist working in tandem to create a web site; because the applications to create the site were custom designs. The web hosting company merely provided the hardware and Internet connectivity. Most hosting was done by ISPs (Internet Service Providers.)

Today, web hosting is accompanied by a myriad of applications that are one click installs. Not only have the traditional web hosting companies implemented free add-ons, but new entrants such as domain name registrars, have added web hosting to their host of services. An example of the heightened activity can be witnessedby just last week’s announcements of hosting companies adding capacity:CyrusOne announced that it had added 16,000 square feet of data center spaceSun Microsystems announced that it had opened its new 76,000 square foot data centerInternap Network Services announced that it had opened a new 10,000 square foot facility, with capacity to expand to 40,000.Raging Wire announced that it had expanded its’ facility to include 46,000 square feet.

Iron Mountainopened a new data center in Toronto, Canada.

Rackspace said itwill invest $100 million to transform a vacant San Antonio shopping mallIn just one week of announcements more than 148,000 square feet was added to the Internet\’sdata center capacity. The companies aboveare major web hosting providers, but there is plenty of room for new, and growth opportunity for existing, boutique web hosting companies. The boutiques will either have their own facilities, or become a reseller for one of the major hosters. As a reseller they will add an additional level of services and applications. To gain even more perspective there are more than 8,000,000 monthly searches done on the keyword phrase web hosting!

A ratio of competition in a specific category that I use as a guideline for ranking an Internet Business on future growth potential indicates this category has a Vicissitude Ratio of 40.92; which means how easy or how hard it is to improve your position for a particular keyword, or keyword phrase, in search engine results.

A Vicissitude Ratio under 100 is considered relevant for successfully competing to improve your position in the SERP (Search Engine Results Pages).Anything under 100 is meaningful as a category for new competition and making money online. For a comparison,my category for this web site is Internet Business Opportunity, and its’ competition ratio is 716.14. Meaning shrimpin’ is tough in this category. Very little, to no, room for new competition making money online.
