Sometimes Business Owners have too exalted of an opinion of their Internet Business Opportunity; which leads to fantasy values. The scenario I hear usually goes like this: “I want you to sell my website. It has such GREAT POTENTIAL!” When I hear an owner evoke those words I know their “opinion of value” is either how much they need for their next project, or how much they spent trying to make their current project Make Money Online.
On occasion I am wrong in my valuation. For example, a few years ago an owner was looking for a buyer for their eight year old travel website. The site was making money. About $1M in revenue with $950K in SDE (Seller’s Discretionary Earnings). Based on the age and category of the business my opinion of value was $4.5M. The owner said that was not the price he had in mind. He wanted a much higher price. He did end up finding a buyer that paid $7M. The buyer was from Europe. The buyer had the dollar/Euro exchange going for him. He also “just had to have” a travel business for his portfolio. This is a rare mix to find.
The seller below is not so lucky. The business was originally listed in September of 2007 at $69,000. He recently lowered his expectations to $59,000. My guess is that this Internet business opportunity will lead to going out of business before it is sold. One might say it is for the dogs; as it sells pet vitamins. |
